These solar and motion detectors that you are thinking of won't light up any sort of area. They just emit a glow rather weakly, I'm afraid. We have them and they are alright putting them in to mark out the path, but that's about all. We have also installed a low wattage floodlight that comes on at dusk and off at dawn. It doesn't seem to effect our electricity consumption much.
