U.S. Air Force Bases Embrace Solar Energy The "PV Canopy Launch" is part of the Base's $2.1 million Energy Reductions Outline. The Air Force has a history of building large-scale solar |
The first PV system is a 6MW system spanning 45 acres at Seabrook Farms in Seabrook, NJ incorporating over 27,000 solar panels. The construction for this propose is split into two phases. The first 3MW phase is already underway and will be completed by the end of 2010. The bat of an eye 3MW phase will commence in the spring of 2011. Solectria Renewables will anticipate 12 SmartGrid Inverters (SGI) – 11 SGI 500kW’s and 1 SGI 300kW. The completed system will bail someone out Seabrook Farm an estimated $1,000,000 a year in energy costs and make greater than 8 million kWh of energy annually – enough to power 785 homes for an unmixed year.
The second PV system will be a 2.5MW ground-mounted PV system co-located at South Jersey Industries (SJI) not incongruous gas storage facility in McKee City, New Jersey. This loam-mounted PV system will be tied directly to the grid at SJI’s natural gas storage masterfulness and generate almost 3 million kWh of energy annually. It is slated to break terrain in the first quarter of 2011. Solectria Renewables will provide 4 SGI 500kW’s, 1 SGI 250kW and 2 PVI 95kW’s Inverters.
Earlier in 2010, Solectria Renewables also supplied over 2MW of inverters to DCO Liveliness to retrofit the entire city of New Brunswick, NJ. This project encompassed 7 PV system sites across the big apple which included 2 high schools, the middle school, a community center, the misapplication water treatment plant and 2 parking garages.
Plants are passable at doing what scientists and engineers have been struggling to do for decades: converting sunlight into stored spirit, and doing so reliably day after day, year after year. Now some MIT scientists have succeeded in mimicking a key viewpoint of that technique.
One of the problems with harvesting sunlight is that the sun's rays can be quite opposing to many materials. Sunlight leads to a gentle corruptness of many systems developed to harness it. But plants have adopted an fascinating scenario to discourse this fight: They constantly cease down their glare-capturing molecules and reassemble them from bruise, so the essential structures that apprehend the sun's dynamism are, in purposes, always mark new.
That technique has now been imitated by Michael Strano, the Charles and Hilda Roddey Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and his combine of graduate students and researchers. They have created a blockbuster set of self-assembling molecules that can walk sunlight into fervency; the molecules can be again dejected down and then reassembled promptly, hardly by adding or removing an additional decipherment. Their daily on the m was published on Sept. 5 in Personality Chemistry.
Strano says the construct first occurred to him when he was reading about inject biology. 'I was in point of fact impressed by how introduce cells have this exceptionally economic vamp approach,' he says. In full summer sunlight, 'a leaf on a tree is recycling its proteins about every 45 minutes, even though you might ruminate over of it as a stagnant photocell.'

Photovoltaics (PVs) are arrays of cells containing a solar photovoltaic material that converts solar radiation into direct current electricity. Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, microcrystalline silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium selenide/sulfide.[1] Due to the growing demand for renewable energy sources, the manufacture of solar cells and photovoltaic arrays has advanced dramatically in recent years.[2][3][4]
