County looks at solar energy to meet its needs

The invent, presented by Dovetail Solar and Wind of Athens and based locally in Toledo, proposes a 260-by-50-foot, 67-kilowatt solar array to be placed south of a parking lot for Sandusky County offices at 2020 Countryside Determination.

Unlike the wind turbine proposal from SUREnergy that commissioners considered at daybreak last month, the solar array would require no bonding or upfront payments.

Rather than, the county would sign a 10-year power purchasing bargain with a third-party investment firm, during which the electricity generated by the array would be sold back to the county at comparable or even bring rates than their current electricity rates, County Administrator Warren Brown said Thursday.

Dovetail estimated this plans will save the county between $15,000 and $28,000 in the first 10 years.

Under the plan, the county would have an option to buy the system at its current fair-market value, after the fresh 10-year contract expires.

If the county signs another 10-year acquire after the first expires, the projected savings increase to between $19,000 and $48,000.

The price to establish the system is estimated at $427,824, but much or all of that cost is expected to be covered by state and federal grants and tax credits for renewable dash.

Those grants and tax credits are not available to government entities, which is why a third-party investment fellowship is interested in building the array and selling energy to the county, according to Bruce Gonring of Dovetail Solar and Diminish.

Is it possible to get 3,000 GW from 30,000 sq.mi. of photovoltaic arrays?

I was reading an article and it said that it was possible to get 3,000gigawatts from 30,000 square miles of photovoltaic arrays if it was at 14% efficiency. Is this possible? How do you do the math to figure out the possibility of this?


I find it easier to work with metric units, so I'll just convert the numbers first. So 30000 square miles is the same as 77 700 square kilometers (according to Google), which is 77 700 000 000 square meters.

At peak sunlight hours (noon), there's about 1000 W/m^2 from the sun. So, over that area, there's a total of (7.77x10^10 m^2) * (1000 W/m^2) = 7.77x10^13 W of solar power. That's a lot more than 3000GW (which is 3x10^12 W), so at least there's nothing wrong so far.


Let's see and find out... Taking this panel for example (200-250w panels about this same size are widely available now/common):
